Trondheim, a city in the middle of Norway, 63 1⁄4 26’ N. 160.000 inhabitants –with little tradition of contemporary art. The art academy has been a transit for young artists and teachers; you leave as fast as possible if you have any ambitions with regard to the International scene. You get your MFA and run.
Twelve recently educated artists from Norway, Sweden and England took a stand and decided to stay. We established Marienborg art community in an old industrial building in the city. Marienborg aims to be a part of the city development process and provide cultural resources to the society. We believe in the different results and the strength of cooperation. From our base we want to stimulate the growth of contemporary art, and make it visible in public places. We want the issues we raise to be present in people’s minds.
December 6–10 2006 we asked “what are you doing here?”, and invited several people from the local, national and international art world as conversation partners. By doing this we initiated an ongoing debate. We search to find a way forward, and work to create the ambience we need to live and create in the city we have chosen as home.
